Spanish school, teachers, and courses
CELA (Centro de Lingüística Aplicada) on Margarita Island was established in 1997 by Sabine Loffler (1965). Loffler is the daughter of German immigrants, an arts graduate, a Doctor in Hispanic Philology certified by UNED. She also holds a Master's in distance learning, and she is currently doing a specialization in adult learning.
Before opening the school, Loffler worked as a Spanish teacher at different universities in Germany.
The Spanish school is small and very informal, with a cordial and friendly environment. CELA is situated in a beautiful house in the Playa El Angel residential area, one of the quietest locations on Isla Margarita.
There are five classrooms, two of them with air conditioning, and three open classrooms with fans. There is a kitchen with coffee, tea and drinking water for all our students.
Our students aged between 18 to 70+ and come from all countries of the world.
It is very rewarding to see people who would never have met if they had not to come to CELA, becoming friends in spite of the cultural, regional, and even age differences.
Our teachers are between 25 and 47 years old. They are all graduates, and have completed pedagogical studies. The lessons are entirely in Spanish except for the beginners' level where the students' mother tongue is used for the first days of the course.
The content of the Spanish course is oriented towards the students' needs and interests, taking into consideration different kinds of learning processes. The main approach we use in our lessons is the communicative approach, although we also make use of grammar as a key tool. Both the content and the progression of the course are based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, and the curriculum of the Instituto Cervantes.
Although we takeVenezuelan cultural and social aspects into account, we do emphasize the learning of Spanish as an international language.
Once a month, all teachers get together at school to do a workshop and discuss aspects of the methodology of the Spanish as a Foreign Language teaching. This keeps us up to date with new trends in teaching.
We work thorugh different everyday situations in the classroom once the students have attained an appropriate level of Spanish that enables them to relate to Latin-American culture.
